Global Changemakers is a British Council funded global youth network of social entrepreneurs and community activists from 112 countries worldwide. Its mission is to empower youth to catalyse positive social change, something which it achieves through:
There are currently over 700 Changemakers and more than 200,000 young people involved in Global Changemakers activities each year. Since its inception at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in 2007, Global Changemakers has organised and run over 15 regional and global youth workshops across the world – in Amman, Beirut, Cape Town, Doha, Harare, Rio de Janeiro and London, among others. Global Changemakers have been invited to participate in World Economic Forum events in Cartagena, Dar es Salaam, Sharm el Sheikh, Cape Town, and Davos, the Clinton Global Initiative, G20, UN World Climate Conference, Women Deliver, and the launch of the World Bank’s Youth Anti-Corruption network.
What is the purpose of the Asia Youth Summit? The AYS will select and bring together 60 young social entrepreneurs and community activists from across Asia for a five-day summit which will:
How will participants be selected? On 1 April 2011, an online call for applications will go out on www.global-changemakers.net asking social entrepreneurs, community activists and volunteers from Asia and the UK aged 18-24 to submit a written application and 2-minute YouTube video detailing their track record in community work and how they plan to contribute to the network activity and wider impact if selected. Together with local staff and Global Changemakers from previous summits the applications will be evaluated and, considering the quality of the applications as well as geographic, thematic and gender balance, 54 candidates from Asia and 6 from the UK (with a strong Asia connection, e.g. migrant background, residence in Asia, project work in the region) will be invited to attend the summit and join the Global Changemakers network.
What is the format and timing for the event?
What are the intended outcomes? During the summit, participants will work in issues-based groups (e.g. environment and climate change, social entrepreneurship, education, human rights), to develop plans for Regional Action Projects (or RAPs) aimed at raising awareness of key issues facing Asia. Within a month of the summit’s conclusion, the groups will submit their proposals to the programme team, and 3-7 RAPs will receive funding to continue.
In addition, the participants brought into the network at the AYS become eligible to apply for individual grant funding and support. They will also join existing workgroups collecting knowledge, ideas and best practices and share their ideas and experience with the wider Global Changemakers community.
